Athumi and itsme® launch innovative solution to replace student certificates

Less administration for students and companies that use student data.

March 21, 2024 – Athumi and itsme® today announce the launch of a groundbreaking solution for streamlining and digitizing the various administrative processes that students come into contact with. This innovative data product - developed in collaboration with itsme® - will provide students, employers and HR service providers with an efficient and secure way to access the data transferred via the paper student certificate today.

Fundamental document for students, employers and governments

Replacing the paper student certificate with a digital data stream offers numerous benefits for students, employers and HR service providers. From simplifying the student housing application process, making it easier to obtain student benefits, to facilitating student recruitment, the versatility of this data product is great. The authentic source of the data is AHOVOKS, the Agency for Higher Education, Adult Education, Qualifications and Study Grants.

The market for student jobs in Belgium has grown strongly in recent years. For example, figures from the RSZ from 2023 show that the number of working students increased by 41.84% to no less than 626,733 in the period from 2012 to 2022. The number of available student jobs in the same period increased by 73.18% to 1,019,300. By eliminating the need to request and forward the necessary documents, the data exchange process is significantly optimized and thus reduces the administrative burden. With this data stream, Athumi and itsme® are taking the first step in this regard.

Easy digital sharing via the itsme® app

The launch of this new data flow makes it possible for students to easily share authentic and certified data about their enrollment in a Flemish higher education institution digitally and securely via a Personal Online Datastore (Pod). They no longer have to search for the data themselves, and the recipient always receives the relevant, authentic information. A Pod enables the sharing of this personal data through advanced authentication and consent, which is granted via the itsme® app. By using the Personal Online Datastores platform based on Solid technology, which has previously been successfully used for sharing diploma data in collaboration with Randstad Group, the privacy and security of student data is guaranteed and the student always keeps control over who has access to their data and for what period.

Doccle will also offer this solution to its customers, so that they can use this data point seamlessly. Athumi is further committed to an open ecosystem.

"Their reputation for sharing data in a secure and responsible manner makes itsme® and Doccle valuable partners for facilitating this data collaboration. Customers of itsme® and Doccle will be able to connect easily, without having to get to know the complexity of Solid."

Rollout in 2024

A first version of this data stream will be available in the summer of 2024, with a planned production launch from the fall. Additional data points will be added in the coming months to digitize additional administrative processes for students. Athumi works closely with leading HR service providers and large employers - including Randstad Group, Manpower, Synergie and Colruyt Group - to ensure maximum applicability of the shared data.

"We are very pleased that the collaboration with Athumi is now taking shape with the launch of the digital student certificate. Now that this first data flow is becoming a reality and the technical connections have been made, additional applications will soon follow. Our common ambition remains unchanged: to develop an ecosystem where data can be shared safely and easily, on the initiative of citizens. These achievements, where safety, efficiency and respect for privacy come together, are an important driver for our economy."

The key role of students

Students are a dynamic and progressive group within society, with an intrinsic curiosity for innovation and a high degree of technological literacy. By putting students at the center of the process, Athumi can provide a powerful boost to the adoption of Personal Online Datastores within broader society.

Itsme
"Unlocking this data is a great step for the ecosystem. We look forward to further making these and other data points available to companies in our ecosystem. About itsme®

Since 2017, the itsme® app has been the simple and secure reference in mobile identification and privacy protection in the digital world with more than 7 million users. With itsme® you can do the following: identification (the creation of a new online account and sharing identity data), authentication (secure and personal access to a website or application), approval of a transaction (confirmation of an order or bank payment ) and finally, legal electronic signature of documents (qualified electronic signature with the highest level of security).

itsme® was recognized as a digital identity by the Belgian government in January 2018 and at European level in December 2019 (LOA high eIDAS). The application has wide applications in the financial sector, because it complies, among other things, with the PSD2, FATF, GDPR guidelines and has been ISO27001 certified.

itsme® was developed by the Belgian Mobile ID consortium, which unites the seven Belgian market leaders from the banking and telecommunications sector: Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, KBC/CBC & ING on the one hand and Orange Belgium, Proximus and Telenet on the other. In mid-2021, for the first time since the launch of the identity app, a government fund entered the capital as a new shareholder, with a 20% stake: the Federal Participation and Investment Company (FPIM). Six other shareholders each also contributed additional capital, with the objective of taking further steps towards a European digital identity.

The app is available in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and since 2023 also in other European countries such as Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom.

itsme® brings the security of the electronic identity card to the mobile world.
